Top 10 "Invisible" Issues with Used Hot Tubs

  • 1. Hidden Leaks

Small leaks in plumbing, unions, or jet housings may not be visible when the tub is dry or partially filled. They can worsen quickly once in use.

  • 2. Faulty Heater Element

The hot tub may power on, but if the heater element is weak or failing, it won’t properly heat the water—or may trigger safety shutdowns.

  • 3. Bad Circulation Pump

A circulation pump may run quietly but provide little to no water movement, which can lead to poor filtration and heating problems.

  • 4. Malfunctioning Control Board

Electrical issues like intermittent shutoffs, temp misreads, or jet malfunctions often point to a failing (and expensive to replace) control board.

  • 5. Tripped or Weak GFCI Breaker

The spa might seem to work fine, but an aging or improperly grounded breaker could trip randomly—especially under load.

  • 6. Clogged or Cracked Plumbing

Internal plumbing lines can clog with biofilm, calcium, or debris. Cracks or brittle plumbing from freezing aren’t always visible unless the tub is pressure-tested.

  • 7. Chemical Imbalance Damage

Past neglect can cause long-term corrosion to components like heaters, sensors, and seals—issues that aren’t always visible on inspection.

  • 8. Freeze Damage

Freeze cracks in plumbing or pumps may have been patched poorly or not discovered yet, especially if the tub was recently moved or drained in cold weather.

  • 9. Software or Firmware Issues

Older control systems may have outdated software or glitches that cause delays, misread temperatures, or require replacement—not something you’d know without running it fully.

  • 10. Structural Frame Rot

The cabinet may look fine, but moisture over time can rot the internal wood frame, affecting stability and long-term durability.

Pro Tip: If not using a professional inspection service, always ask that the hot tub is fully filled and heated for 24+ hours before finalizing a purchase to catch as many of these "invisible" issues as possible!

USed hot tub/Swim Spa inspection Frequently asked questions

  • Do you inspect all brands of hot tubs/swim spas?

Our Service Technicians have deep experience & are generally comfortable inspecting any brand of hot tub or  swim spa. In the case the brand is a very uncommon or rare one, the staff member scheduling your inspection will confirm with our Service team that we can indeed complete the inspection before confirming your appointment.

  • How long does the 25-point inspection take?

We typically schedule inspection appointments for 90 minutes to ensure that our Service Technicians have ample time to inspect all the elements of the tub and discuss the results with our customer.  However, it is critical that the hot tub must have been filled and running for at least 24 horus prior to our inspection to ensure the most accurate assessment.

  • Do I have to be present for the inspection?

Experience has taught us that it is critical that the customer or a customer-appointed representative is present during our inspection so that any questions can be answered & any issues can be explained & viewed first-hand.

In the case of an on-site inspection of a used hot tub or swim spa from a thrid-party seller, it is also mandatory that the customer (or a customer-appointed representative) is present in order to prevent any confusion or issues with the seller.  If the customer or customer-appointed representative cannot be present, the inspection will need to be re-scheduled.  In the case the inspection is not rescheduled &/or the business is not alerted no one will be present before our Technician arrives, a small fee will be charged for travel time to and from the appointment.

  • Will you do the inspection if the hot tub or spa hasn't been filled, heated and running for 24 hours?

In order to give you the most thorough & accurate inspection possible, it is critical that the hot tub or swim spa has been filled, heated (if applicable) & running for 24 hours prior to the inspection.

If you want to proceed with the inspection without this condition met, our Service Technician will complete the inspection but will ask that you sign an acknowlegement  as to the limitations of the inspection.

  • Do you tell the seller the outcome of the inspection?

Our Service Technicians will only discuss inspection results with the customer ordering the inspection (&/or individuals the customer designates as approved for information sharing).  Whether or not results are shared with the seller is left to the customer's discretion.
